Just curious, since I just got a notification that someone else wants me to add them to my linkin network, how many social channels (Kinja and forums included) are you even remotely active on?

Google + (several subgroups)

Instagram (barely)

Linkedin

Youtube

Vimeo

Oppositelock

Overland & Expedition

Overlandbound

Ih8mud

Expedition Portal

Expedition Utah

It’s a lot to manage...and I don’t even have the standard Twitter, FB, Snapchat combo.

Bonus Question: are you able to manifest electronics from your crotch? That seems like a really odd talent and you should probably get that checked out.

Jalopnik, but only the main site and Oppo under my screen name. A few other auto sites and random forums under a similar screen name. LinkedIn under my real name. And that is all. Between that and two personal emails and work email, plus text messages, it's all the communication I could possibly handle without being a total dick to everyone.

Purely looking at social networks and ignoring one-way traffic websites and IM like Whatsapp there isn’t much I use. Linkedin, sometimes. And Kinja obviously. Sometimes a forum here and there. No FB, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram or Google+. I don’t think I’ve ever left a comment on Youtube and the like.

I see too much sharing of personal information on solely social sites like FB and others. In my day, you had maybe one person, two at most, with whom you shared your important personal stories. With social media, people feel the need to share everything with everybody. I think that’s a bad thing.

Twitter: I mostly use this for following YT channels I like to see when they’re streaming. The other thing I use it for is for Support/CS cases for online services I use. If you’ve never gone through Twitter for support, it’s about 100x better than phone calls or e-mail in terms of quickly they respon and reach out to you. Somehow I’ve managed to get 2 followers over the last 2 years, despite the fact that if I put out a single twit in a 2 month time frame, I’m incredibly active.

Facebook: Only for keeping in contact with friends. I’ve culled all of my “pages” and “groups” years ago. There isn’t even a photo of me on the site.

Kinja: I’m here, hi.

ArsTechnica (FP/Forums): This is definitely where I’m the most active. I’ve made thousands of posts/comments on there over the years and am even a subscriber to the website. I’ve sold and purchased stuff in their Agora forum, I take part/read the political forums, and learn a lot/post a lot in their technical forums from topics ranging from MS Products, Mobile, GPUs, Desktop Builds, etc.

Google: I literally only have a Google account to keep track of my YouTube subscriptions. Beyond that I use it for nothing. All of my e-mail and online services are through Microsoft and my phone is from a certain fruity company. If it wasn’t for Google merging all of their disparate accounts years ago into one central Google account, I still wouldn’t have a Google account to this day.

I don’t consider LinkedIn part of the social media ghetto, because unlike the other vanity time wasters it can actually provide good networking & career info.

Plus, if you update it a couple times a year with whatever you’ve worked on, you’ll keep track of smaller projects etc that you might otherwise forget, and have a good set of content for when you update your resume or sit down for career planning.

Older millennial here: Social media can be a harmful addiction if you’re not good at setting boundaries for yourself.

I find Facebook very useful but you have to be honest with what you really want it to do. Oversharing and glossing up your life for “friends” will not make you happy. The real-life analogy is spending all of your free time trying to impress others instead of doing what you really like.

Used properly, Facebook and other social networking tools have enabled me to connect with people and resources that I would otherwise have never found. Of course, never post anything offensive that can be used against you because once online it’s very difficult to hide.

Absolutely. It’s more difficult being a parent today, especially since I never grew up with the tech. You don’t want to hit it all with the ban hammer, but you also have to be vigilant. And I fully understand the benefits of social media. It’s just been easier for to draw my own bright line and choose not to get involved with. I spend too much time on Oppo as it is, and I don’t want to lose more time with the others.

Thanks for the reply.

I am taking a stab at that parenting thing too, and so far we have been successful in preventing our 2-year-old from getting glued to a screen. It seems that by limiting screen time, we are also keeping the kid’s interest tuned towards more engaging things in real life.

Electronic entertainment offers a lot, but even I admit to overusing video games and computers as a kid. This is especially a problem in Asia where traditional culture (being docile and following orders) conflicts with modern society’s requirements of innovation and creativity. Kids and parents both addicted to their smartphones because neither knows how to be proactive nor exercise critical thinking.

Kinja'd!!! ttyymmnn > Chan - Mid-engine with cabin fever
09/21/2016 at 09:33

Kinja'd!!!3

My boys, particularly my soon-to-be-eleven twins (I also have a 14-y-o), are hooked on YouTube. If they had their way, they would keep their heads plugged into the computer all day long. Mostly, they watch videos of other people playing video games. I have trouble understanding this phenomenon. I suppose it’s like getting all the rewards of playing the game without actually having to put in the effort.

We finally had to ban them from computers/VGs during the school week. It wasn’t that they were on them too much as it was that we couldn’t get them to unplug. It was like taking crack away from an addict. They would throw tantrums and scream and yell at us. They finally got used to it and, in fact, one of my boys came to me soon after the ban was instituted and he said, “I’m glad you made us turn off the computers because now we can play football with our friends.” Now, when their friend comes over after school, they play soccer, basketball, hide and seek, water bottle toss, you name it. All the things that I think kids should be doing at this age.

But it’s difficult, because computers are to this generation of kids what TV was to my generation. Parents called TV the great babysitter, because they could plunk their kids down in front of the set and get some work done. Now, we plunk our kids in front of YouTube or VGs to get work done but, more often than not, the work we want to get done is updating our Facebook status. For me, it’s writing about aviation history for Oppo.

Last Saturday, I went to my boys’ soccer game. Sitting next to me was a mom with two kids, and her other son was playing in the game. The two kids wanted to go home, but she told them sternly that she was here to watch their brother play soccer. Then she proceeded to spend the entire time looking at her phone and berating the other kids for acting up. Had she engaged the other kids, watched the game, taken her nose out of her damned phone, she would have seen her son win the game and her other kids probably wouldn’t be acting up.

These handheld computer wonders really are fantastic. They give us information, help us communicate, entertain us. But they also obsess us. I think it has to do with the basic human desire to want something now . What’s the temperature? I can look it up now . What time is the game on? I can look it up now . I got a text? I have to answer it now . We don’t have to wait. So we sit at dinner with friends all glued to the phone, or we walk with our heads down looking at the phone. The handheld allowed us to be connected to the entire world while being entirely disconnected from our neighborhood.

Sorry for the long essay. I got on a roll, but I too am struggling with technology, wanting to using it while wanting (and needing) to be free of it. It’s tough. It really is an addiction.
